State Required Boating Safety Certificate Course!

The recently passed “Brianna’s Law” in New York State mandates that everyone must pass a boating safety course by January 1, 2025.  The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Canandaigua will offer classes all year round to facilitate this process.

The new law states that you are required to be the holder (in possession) of a Boating Safety Certificate any time you want to operate a PWC (Personal Water Craft). You must also be at least 14 years old. If you will be operating any another type of vessel you must be at least 10 years old and have the certificate. The requirement to take the course was phased in over the past four (4) years until now:

  • All motor boat operators regardless of age will need a boating safety certificate beginning in 2025.
