State Required Boating Safety Certificate Course!

The recently passed “Brianna’s Law” in New York State mandates that everyone must pass a boating safety course by January 1, 2025.  The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Canandaigua will offer classes all year round to facilitate this process.

The new law states that you are required to be the holder (in possession) of a Boating Safety Certificate any time you want to operate a PWC (Personal Water Craft). You must also be at least 14 years old. If you will be operating any another type of vessel you must be at least 10 years old and have the certificate. The requirement to take the course will be phased in over the next five (5) years as follows:

You will be required to get this Certificate if you were born on or after January 1, 1993 effective January 1, 2020 through January 1, 2021 (turning 27 or younger in 2020),
then if you were born on or after January 1, 1988 effective January 1, 2021 through January 1, 2022 (turning 33 or younger in 2021).
The next year if born on or after January 1, 1983 effective January 1, 2022 through January 1, 2023. (turning 39 or younger in 2022)
The year after that if you were born on or after January 1, 1978 effective January 1, 2023 through January 1, 2024 (turning 45 or younger in 2020).
And finally, all operators will be required to have the Certificate completed between January 1, 2024 and before January 1, 2025.

The Safe Boating Course
The Safe Boating Course

This class is offered as a "hybrid" combination, consisting of about 4 hours of self-study and 4 hours of face-to-face classroom time with an experienced instructor authorized by the USCoast Guard Auxiliary.
The self-study portion is facilitated shortly after you register and submit your payment.  We will send you the workbook and a "study guide". You need to answer all the questions in the study guide and bring this with you to the class.  This is our proof that you have studied the book and are ready for the classroom session.
At the conclusion of the classroom instruction, you will need to take a written exam which will cover both the About Boating Safely information and the New York State Boater's Guide contents.  The classroom session will review the important information you need for the exams!
Upon the successful completion of all requirements you will receive a certificate and wallet card!
Should you not be able to attend the class for which you registered, you may join any other class in Canandaigua to complete your requirements.
